Early warning diagnostic test for Primates – To detect the increased risk of developing chronic heart failure.
Troponin I is a protein found in the heart muscle and is not normally found in the blood. When the heart muscle becomes damaged Troponin I is released into the bloodstream, as heart damage increases, greater amounts of Troponin I are released. It is regarded as the marked of choice for diagnosis of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI).
Pro-BNP is also a protein, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and is also a marker for heart damage, but specifically shows the extent of the infarction quantitatively, specifically regarding any left ventricle systolic dysfunction.
Quantitative Troponin I alone can be used for both diagnosis and prognosis of heart damage from MI, however Pro-BNP is more reliable to predict damage from strokes.
Both tests can be useful screening tools to detect an increased risk of developing chronic heart failure in the future on subjects that have no symptoms at present.
